SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF SOIL RESISTANCE TO PENETRATION IN NO TILLAGE SYSTEM REA
Cortez,Jorge W.; Matos,Wéliton P. da S.; Arcoverde,Sálvio N. S.; Cavassini,Victor H.; Valente,Igor Q. M..
ABSTRACT In areas of no tillage system where there is intense traffic of machines and minimal soil mobilization, the periodic monitoring allied on localized soil compaction represent important strategies aiming agricultural sustainability. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of soil resistance to penetration (RP) in no tillage system. Data collection took place in an experimental area of 7.65 ha using a sample grid composed of 40 points. At each point the RP was determined by three replications from which was obtained the mean RP, the maximum RP, and the depth of the maximum RP in the 0-0.40m layer. Deformed samples were randomly collected in the area to determine the water content in the soil (θ). Then the RP data...

Prototype for soil mechanical resistance measurement with chisel plow automated control REA
MACHADO,THIAGO M.; LANÇAS,KLÉBER P..
ABSTRACT In Brazil, there are several available models and systems to measure soil compaction; however, the data generated by such equipment have to be processed and interpreted, making the process expensive. Our study aimed to evaluate a prototype of instrumented rods to identify soil compacted layers and control chiseling depth, and compared it to a conventional system at a fixed depth of 0.35 m. In order to compare them, we assessed the following parameters: hourly fuel consumption, operational fuel consumption, drawbar power, average power, average speed, slipping, tractor effective field capacity and response time. Our results showed that mechanical chiseling at variable depths reduced in 26% the operational fuel consumption and increased in 14% the...

Modeling and correction of soil penetration resistance for variations in soil moisture and soil bulk density REA
Silva,Wininton M. da; Bianchini,Aloísio; Cunha,Cesar A. da.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the behavior of models for adjusting data of soil penetration resistance for variations in soil moisture and soil bulk density. The study was carried out in Lucas do Rio Verde, MT, Brazil in a typic dystrophic red-yellow Latosol (Oxisol) containing 0.366 kg kg−1 of clay. Soil penetration resistance measurements were conducted in the soil moistures of 0.33 kg kg−1, 0.28 kg kg−1, 0.25 kg kg−1 and 0.22 kg kg−1. Soil penetration resistance behavior due to variations in soil moisture and soil bulk density was assessed by estimating the soil resistance values by non-linear models. There was an increase of the soil penetration resistance values as soil was losing moisture. For the same edaphic condition studied, small...

RESISTANCE OF A RED LATOSOL TO PENETRATION: COMPARISON OF PENETROMETERS, MODEL ADJUSTMENT, AND SOIL WATER CONTENT CORRECTION REA
Duarte,Thiago F.; Silva,Tonny J. A. da; Bonfim-Silva,Edna M.; Fenner,Willian.
ABSTRACT Penetration resistance can be determined directly in the field or in the laboratory. However, data obtained using the two methods are not directly comparable. Considering soil moisture influences penetration resistance, penetration resistance data obtained using the two methods can be corrected based on common moisture values. To enable comparison of the data, the measured data should be adjusted using mathematical models. Consequently, the objective of the present study was to compare soil penetration resistance values measured in a Red Latosol using a static penetrometer and a bench-top electronic penetrometer. The comparison was carried out using samples collected from different soil layers, based on moisture levels ranging from 0.15 to 0.28 kg...

Use of penetrometers in agriculture: a review REA
Moraes,Moacir T. de; Silva,Vanderlei R. da; Zwirtes,Anderson L.; Carlesso,Reimar.
Soil physical quality can be easily and quickly evaluated by using simple equipment to identify levels of soil compaction. Hence, it is necessary to know the variables responsible for changes in the soil penetration resistance (SPR). The aim of this review is to identify the main factors related to the various equipment used for assessing SPR as a soil physical quality indicator in agriculture. This literature review describes the different types of equipment used and its relationship with SPR. A wide range of procedures, devices, and equipments are available. Much of variability in SPR results is related to the equipment model, cone angle and diameter, and penetration rate. Usually, restrictions to root growth are correlated with SPR values above 2-3 MPa....
